The answer I think is BEGEM but how does that work? Is there a literary reference that I'm missing?

Stab at it -- A begum is a "grand oriental lady" with E changed for U uncle?

Aha! Even after you had replied I couldn't see the 'changing sides for uncle' bit. But I have just realised that the letters E and U are the 2 sides of the word UNCLE which are swapped.
