a?s?i Looks like assai fom assai-l. Don't know any conductors of this name but allegro assai means very fast so has a music sense. Any thoughts.

You've got it, Des. Assai means 'very' in Italian.

It probably means an intruction to the conductor, in which case it sort of fits the wordplay.
