I seem to be the only one struggling with 4 & 5 down: 4d "leading, say, having captured knight for free" - U-?-G. 5d "waste one's drink? Partner swallows it" - D-?-I-A-E" I'm sure getting these would make 13a clear ... which it isn't at the moment! Can anyone help please?

Thanks, Mamya. Would never have got the answer this way - because I can't quite see why "leading" is "up" ... and as a non-chess player I'd never have guessed the symbol for knight would be "n". Ah, well ... at least my fog of ignorance has now been dissipated!
