Still bothered by a few in the bottom right :
49A - More pleasant information about subject in school (12)
?????R?????N
38D - Tearing one's allowance of fabric (10)
???E???I??
41D - In a chair, perhaps starts to repair embroidered cape sleeve (9)
R?C??????
&
54A - One local lad heading off to college is like an ape (9)
I?I?A???? - is this IMITATING or IMITATIVE? I can't work out the parsing

Obviously this isn't all I'm confused by, but assistance with these may help me with the others

You may wish to disregard those answers as, using them, I am now unable to make any sense of:
50d Spaniard is to make two departures - D?E??
and
57a Powdered head: that's an old scheme - G???N????

Thanks Rose and Sudokulover.
If I use DIEGO that makes 57a GOODNIGHT, which fits but I absolutely cannot parse. Any thoughts?

That would make a lot more sense. I had an 'ING' ending on 38d instead of an 'ION' which it obviously should be.
Many thanks.
