I am pretty sure that the first of the 7 misprints must
an R from 1a.

I have the other 6 misprints and can see the alternative
title to the crossword but it is the R which is bothering me.

Am I on the wrong track?

Not at all, rosie: if you have the other six right, the word fits well with all the others -- it's even in my 1964
OED with that meaning! Does that make sense now?

I know that the 7 seven letters spell a synonym on the 'typo' in the title but I can't work out which word in 1a is misspelled by an R !

hope that makes some sense as I don't want to spoil it for others.

I think it's the R replacing a letter in the title, not in 1a -- so the title is counted as a definition?

This trick was used before.

My problem is finding the "I". It has to fall between 30A & 1D, but all seem to parse OK.

Never mind. Took one def as spelled another way.

My I is in one of the last few across clues.
