I'm sorry PEER REVIEW is a bit late - my computer went on the blink at lunch time and I've been struggling to post. Hope you enjoy this week's challenge.

Bonah Electronics would have fixed it in double quick time.

It's on its last legs - don't fancy Windows 8 - trying to pluck up courage to go for Mac Mini.

My daughter who is studying music tech swapped to an apple and my wife only recently swapped to an apple. She too was worried, but now says she would not swap back. They are more expensive though.

I was thinking of getting a refurbished laptop from Dell, one day they had loads with Windows 7 on and a week later not a single one. But I noticed you could chose to have Windows 7 or Windows 8 on a new laptop, so lots of people must be refusing to have Windows 8
How stupid. If it ain't broke...etc

I actually delayed replacing our one and only computer because the 'experts' in the press said how wonderful the new product would be - what a mistake!

Every time MS comes out with a new version it's the same old horror story, & they're already "fixing" it:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2013/05/30/business-windows.html

Do you have MS Office?
"Where did all my buttons go?"
"Why can't I open my old files?"
"Why does it takes six clicks to print a file? ... and it's screwed up!"
I rest my case.

Try OpenOffice. All the programs you need, & the buttons stay where they were:
word-processor,
spreadsheet,
presentation (like Powerpoint, if you're sadist), relational database (only in the most expensive MS Office)
drawing,
formula.
It also works with MS Office files. The opposite is not the case.
And it's free (open source) !

You have nothing to lose but your chains!

Thanks, syzygy - the problem is the computer has lost it's paging file. I've entered the suggested volumes in the settings boxes but when I click 'Set' it refuses to allocate the volume and stays on 0 MB. It's done it before but a disk check has fixed it but not this time. I've no idea why it's working now!
