angst

30th May 2013, 03:54
I am desperately trying to remember a word that I read about recently in an etymological weekly email journal (recently being within the last 12 months). It is an adjective (a long one derived from one of the two European classical languages) and it means to like whipping (I am presuming in a corporal punishment sort of a way).

It is definitely used once in Nicholas Nickleby (that is all I can remeber from the article). Any help gratefully received.

Also a sad farewell to Malcolm Jones aka Bullfrog. My thoughts are with his family.

I can understand your angst. A mastigophorer (from Greek mastix) is a person worthy of being whipped. Mastigophile perhaps? :)
