Here are my attempts.
1. Type of salt used with European fish stew (8) MATELOTE?
(Type of salt is matelot with E for European forms Matelote – a fish stew)

2. Rare Chinese crime Academy gets no backing in Scotland (7) SINAEAN?
(Crime is sin, with A for academy and nae (no in Scotland) backing, giving Sinaean, given in Chambers as a rare adjective meaning “Chinese”)

2. Use logic in resolving the spirit of the place (6,4) GENIUS LOCI?
(Anagram of “Use logic in” to give Genius Loci meaning “spirit of the place”)

3. Refusal by knight to agree with the stopping of a case by voluntary withdrawal of the plaintiff (7) NONSUIT?
(Refusal – no, by knight – n in chess notation, plus “agree with” suit, gives nonsuit- withdrawal of legal suit by plaintiff)

5. Games providing complete protection for some strikers? (6,7) SAFETY MATCHES?
(Cryptic definition as games are “matches” and “strikers” )

5- Had BOXING MATCHES at first, but think it might be safety

Been having a lot of trouble getting onto the site over the past couple of weeks. When I do get on it often shuts down IE. This hasn't been happening with other sites.

Aristo, since moving to Chrome from IE (on Windows XP), have had no such problems.
