Hi brendan,

Please explain 'Anagram of HURLED + C (About)?

The clue for 27 Across of the Daily Mail Crossword
number 14497 is: What drunk did in bar - hurled
liquid round about (7).

But I must apologise as I did not post what letters I
have to complete the answer. They are as follows:
L ? ? ? H ? D.

Originally I did not have the 'D'. That comes from the
word REPUTED which was given for 18 Down from
brendan, posted on this site!

Hi Mahjonng , I see it as follows:-

Answer - LURCHED

Definition = 'What drunk did in bar' from HURLED (Liquid = Anagram indicator) round = Containment indicator 'About' = C(oncerning)

In reference to part of your explanation for the answer to 27 Across of the Daily Mail Crossword number 14497: do not understand how 'C' stands for 'About'.

I have looked in two of my books (crossword companion & oxford dictionary) at the beginning of the 'C' section and it DOES not state it! If it 'C' does stand for 'about' then it is 'new' to me!!

But, when I did look at the beginning of the 'C' section in my crossword companion book it stated "s/l sea" (s/l = sounds like).

So it might be the following as it makes more sense: "hurled" + 'c' (liquid) when "round about" (mixed up) = lurched.

What do you think?

C is short for Circa (about)

Hi again Mahjonng - I've found that abbreviations can be pretty tricky when applying them to crosswords. Just a couple of days ago I needed help with one on this site. As far as this clue is concerned, Chris is correct - C is an abbrev. for Circa (About). Hope that helps.
