Les40. thanks for your reply but have never heard of the long road. Is it a book, magazine or what? Must apologise for being so stupid!

Yes, It's a book about a lad who got cancer in his legs and endeavoured on a long walk for charity across Canada with a prosthetic leg, he later died when his cancer spread but they still hold an annual event to signify this.
Syzygy may be able to expand on this as he's from that part of the world

if you google - The long road, book-

Very long shot - as it is just things that are read- "macaroni" is an old word for a Dandy, also a famous UK comic?
