Hi all,

Struggling to grasp a full parse on this clue

1d) Friend suppresses unconscious thought to become bully (10)
I - T - M - D - T -

I feel it must be INTIMIDATE = bully (as a verb)
But can't seem to piece together the wordplay, I'm toying with
Friend = mate
supresses (container clue)
unconscious = In(n)ate
thought = idea

Some lovely well hidden wordplay in this grid this week so maybe I'm missing something. Please put me out of my misery. Thanks

Could it be Id (from freud) unconscious thought inside Intimate

Hi Les, I was going to include that exact question in my post. Like you I'm not happy with 'Intimate' for 'Friend'.

Chambers Crossword Dictionary has it as a synonym too.

Yeh, I'm not fully happy with it. If 'friend' is to mean 'intimate' I've never heard it in that way before, I haven't got my Chambers with me, maybe it has a meaning as a noun but that's new to me.

Does it mean 'friend' as a verb, as to become a friend which I would think would work better as 'befriend'.
Intimate doesn't quite fit correctly for me, but if you've got your Chambers there, could you check if it's in the definitions (maybe a rarer Def)

I'm still puzzled as to where ID comes from.
