The preamble says 'wordplay in several clues yields an extra letter'. The thematic nature of this crossword 'affects' eight answers, but I don't know if these clues are involved.

That one was simpler than it looked!
Scary film - a classic, famous scary film (whose name you almost have already)
'Starts to show epilepsy- symptoms...' -it's the start/opening letters of 'show epilepsy symptoms'.
The whole word, before amending, is defined by 'mental disorders'.

Hi I have now done all but two 13a and 10d, which I assume are the last two themed ones. Got a list of items 'taken off' but can't fit any in. Can you help?

10 D. This is a themed one - the original answer to the clue has 10 letters. The 'memorial' is a standard word, very common.
13 This isn't themed - just a four letter word for 'prince' (I think it's usually a Muslim prince).
