Can anyone provide a hint for the theme?

Struggling too. Suspect there is some jumping involved if I have got 6ac correct. Is 6d kepi? Cannot understand why. Also stuck with 43 and 40.

6dn is indeed kepi. It's withpeak minus what. I have no idea what the theme is and have no solutions to 1ac, 14ac, 24ac,27ac, 43ac, 45ac, 3dn, 21dn, 38dn and 40dn. Any hints appreciated

I think I have now solved 1ac, 3dn and 14ac, i.e the top left hand corner and I presume that 45 ac is the name of a hot wind whose last four letters are the name of the founder of a cult, but I am still no nearer to the theme. "Maltby" appears twice in the puzzle. I wonder if that is something to do with it?

Kepi is anagr of pike=peak. Have filled grid apart from 40 & 43. 40 could be Foot as FT is often paper. Wonder about nox then but no idea why. Just guessing. Got the missing o's but brain turns to jelly then.

Have now figured out 24ac, 27ac and21dn, which just leaves the bottom right-hand corner (38dn, 40dn and 43ac) before trying to understand the preamble. Still think my explanation of "kepi" is better!

barretter - your explanation of 6d is correct. There are a number of similarly-constructed clues in this puzzle.

My first thought was that the theme might have something to with cricket.

cloverjo - I am afraid the theme has nothing to do with cricket. There is a significant anniversary next Friday.
