I agree that your definition of "endemic" is absolutely correct, and I hesitated to suggest it. However it is a word that is commonly used incorrectly, even in crosswords!

If you look up 'endemic' in Chambers the first def. is 'prevalent'

Yes rambler - that's the misuse. I think we have discussed previously whether dictionaries should be prescriptive or descriptive about language!
