Stuck on last four on the top left-hand corner:
1a (5) Swell vet, one almost forgotten. I have --r-e.
16a (7) East German - wealthy person who refuses to recognise reality. I have --t-i--.
1d (6) sounds like lukewarm support for head of sixth-form college. I have --h---.
4d (7) A saint - what could make one sin? I have s-i---n.
As this was a fairly easy week, I'm sure I'm going to kick myself.

16 Ostrich (ost+rich)
1D School
4D Swithin (although someone else suggested 'swithan' an alternative spelling)

Thanks Malone. The saint must be Swithin Bishop of Winchester buried in the cathedral.

My thanks to Monty and Malone. GCS - somewhat comforting to know I wasn't the only one stuck on those four.

The correct solution to 4 Down is, without any doubt, SWITHIN

The clue says ".. what could make one sin"

The word SIN is S with IN = SWITHIN

I know I am a fuddy duddy but it frustrates me when answers seem to be given for no other reason than they fit the grid, A good cryptic clue leaves no room for doubt and that is the beauty of them. Solve the clue 100% before you put it in the grid!

The person who suggested Swithan said it was an alternative spelling (which I've never heard of, I thought the other one was Swithun) - and also that it was an anagram of 'what' and 'sin'. I went with Swithin.

You make my point - the clue is very clear. The solution can not be SWITHAN, or SWITHUN!
