24ac is Raita = Indian relish sounds like writer

Struggling with the other two -- but Usurious means greedy so going with that

us = American, ious = promissory notes can't figure the ur in between. Would love an explanation.

20d Howl? unknown may = how, don't know where the L comes from. Once again an explanation would be great.

many thanks, both. I almost wish I hadn't been told about "Big Dave" because I may be tempted to cheat in future !! By the way he would appear to suggest that 20 is "Yawl" a curious word , derived from "Unknown" = "Y" and the boring tool (Brad)AWLl

Yawl is a sailing term, yowl, seems to fit the definition, but has nothing to do with boring tools.....I'm happily confused. As far as cheating goes, that's your decision. I have a few sites bookmarked as a last resort.
