looks like Pen to SA ne(w)s - pentosanes, but i can't find it as a word.

I had probems with this trevor and found Pentosan is one of any group of saccarhides which are carbohydrates. Pentosanes ties in with all of the down clues, so I think you are spot on as usual.

The only other option is pentosants and I cant find that either.
