Thanks, Mamya - once again, an ever present help in times of trouble.
I've now corrected my 16 down from 'eupyrion' - apparently 'a contrivance for obtaining a light instantaneously', which linked with 'lightened' in the clue, but which I couldn't parse, to the more obvious 'quayside'.
