Hi,
I'm am running a Stag Do that involves a treasure hunt and need to write some good clues. The Stag is just finishing a PhD and a few of the people going are also at that level or similar so the clues should be pretty tricky. I don't have much experience with cryptic clues but I'm wanting to include some of the tricks.
I was hoping people would be able to help come up with some clues.
Preferably long clues, perhaps a couple lines, rather than the typically very short crossword clues.

The answer's I'd like them to get are:
Anchor at the museum
Gate of the waterfront wall
Bank near the statue in town square
Below the Dock master’s House

If anyone could help, I'd really appreciate it. I've been reading up on cryptic clues and trying to come up with stuff but it's tricky stuff without any practice.
Thanks

1. From branch or root you'll find me here
Or possibly down by the pier:
Now think, then hesitate , then go
Where stones and urns are all on show

From (word is found within the clue) brANCH OR root......(padding)
Pier (idea of the sea)
Now think (muse) hesitate (um) , then go
Where stones and urns etc (definition of museum but you can alter this line to suit the museum. I have used misdirection in that stones and urns can refer to graveyards)

Bank as in slope or as in money?
what's the statue of? or of whom?

Thanks for your response, that's great!
It's a maritime museum so the pier bit is very helpful.

Bank as in money. Hopefully it will be hidden in a fake stone in the railing but maybe just taped underneath it. The Statue is of Syr Hugh Owen (http://www.johnkellyconstruction.com/USERIMAGES/statue-after.jpg)
If it helps, it's a pirate themed Stag Do so it could be a Counting House or some such.

One of my sons got married on International Talk like a Pirate Da (sept 19th, apparently)
Surely you want rather,um, spicy clues than we could put on here?

I meant spicier of course.
This is not a proper cryptic clue in the crossword sense

3.An inclined plane down which to slide
Or hope and pray the loot to hide
That Henry Morgan never earned
Near set in stone, no lessons learned

I may adjust this , or someone else may help!

The first line is another definition of "bank"
"Hope and pray" - to bank on
"The loot to hide" might be too easy
Henry Morgan- well-known pirate (and Admiral)
Syr Hugh Owen, educationalist

Having recently been reading about pirates, their lives were not exactly easy and usually ended with summary hanging.
Sorry, going out today. Was near that stature last month!

Statue, even

2. Get a dreadful punishment leading to (and from) a wet face

Anagram of "get a" indicated by "dreadful".Being gated is a punishment as in "I shall gate you for ten days" so "punishment is the definition.
Wet suggests water
face= boundary, edge of a wall, seafront
I should define "waterfront wall" as well but can't.

For below the Dock Master's House you could change things a bit a do a rebus.

down arrow for "below"
outline drawing of a lock, write the letter L. cross out and put D
To make it harder, draw a lock of hair or one in a canal

for master there are lots of things. Suggest the mast of a sailing ship (very simply so it could be lots of things) and a crown for "ER" (the queen LOL)

for house, I'd do a louse ,write and cross off L and put H. but you could do a horse and write and cross off R and write U or anything else your imagination leads to.

I think that's more than enuf from me for the moment anyway

These are so good, thanks for the help!
I wanted to try and make a kinda of maths based one for town square by doing Town(Town) but couldn't think of any way to continue it past that point.
