VERY nearly finished this mont's Saga £100 job. Can't see anyone else on Forum. 7d "Running decathlon - told off for being bottom". I want it to be N?C?E. Only words I can find are NACRE and NICHE. Can't make either fit the clue. NACHE would fit ("decathlon" with "told" removed), but doesn't seem to be a word - except it appears in my Chambers Backwords. Closing date approaching! Can anyone help please?

The nache bone (or aitch bone) is the rump from
a cow etc.

Subtractive anagram leaving nache as you suspected, in my Chambers nache is given as "the rump (see aitchbone)" rump being bottom appears to be correct.

Actually I had found 'nache' references to "bottom" within a few minutes of posting query. On Google ... some with pics!

Good luck duckb if you send it in. I never do as I always make a mess of it ! I dare not go searching for pics on google. (The mind boggles) But I do have a very old Mrs Beeton cookery book with some beautiful coloured illustrations of the cow's anatomy.

One day I hope to finish a Saga prize crossword; but I'm not banking on it.

I know what you mean about the pics, jazzgirl. It was one of those where I didn't have to go looking. Only second time I've sent in the Saga crossword in about 12 months of trying!
