OK, got it.

OK jazzy, just the poet left. Is he old or (relatively) recent?

Sorry chrise, I was away having dinner.
The poet (I had originally as Spenser) was born 1909, died 1995 .He was knighted. The Nail refers to "Jimmy Nail". HOpe that helps.

I think I can now identify the poet, but I must say I don't understand the clue!

It took me ages, chrisE. Jimmy Nail (actor) played the part of a detective with same surname as the poet.

Thanks, jazzy - that completely passed me by - I knew he played a detective, but no more.
