It's not the greatest clue! I can't see the other one though. Are you sure of the crossing letters?

I don't have any check letters for 21A

As you say, it's not a great clue.

Any thoughts on 18A?

ALE is correct.

Could John McKie have known about today's Herald lead story when he compiled a crossword with so many references to organised religion, religious architecture, clergy, gods and so on?
