Yes. My pre-war French/English dictionary confirms my thought that Grise (f) means gray.
I mean 1914 edition!
New clue is as hard as original. I tried landaulet
(land/oh)but the 'd' is in a bad spot.
Hope the 4 inches of rain in the Western Islands does not cause too much trouble.

You going to have to get this one yourself, but I'll give you another couple of hints.

10A A cake's returned with layers.

Write a type of cake backwards and you'll get a layered rock formation. That will give you the fourth letter of 1D and it's not "D". Now look up the French translation of a form of ammunition. and you'll get 1D.

Hi everyone,
Thanks to crossword help, I found strata and cartouche. I think safety curtain will be alright
for lowering. Nearly done now. Garden is wet but not as wet as some.
