Hi Devonian, the programme I have for 18A is about 'The Majestics' - a Scots rock 'n' roll band. The two words in the answer rhyme, hope that's a help!

It's a little loose, but I read it as "encountered".

I assume you have the game-playing Professor?

Hi raymond
10ac I haven't totally parsed, but the "stem" part is a technical (though quite well known) term for a swollen stem that provides energy for the next year's plant to develop (e.g. crocus).
1dn was my favourite. Think of a French newspaper, then remove an "upward" journalist.
2dn the parade is a verb, not a noun.
