thanks oak - a song from my childhood although I recall it being in an 'onion patch' - nearly there now...

Well I now have "an answer for everything" (like the Master of wit and repartee), but some of the last few I have no idea on the parsing, and I can only see 9 .......s at the moment.

Not 9 - just 8 (I was counting 6ac).

Right first time - it is 9 (not 12, though!)

my final clue is 24ac 'Nervous individual' etc I have .N.L.E but am not sure the 'L' is correct - and I still can't see all the themed references

thanks chrise - I thought the 'L' was suspect but that now means I have 2 to solve as Somalia is clearly wrong for 17d...can you help?

that makes perfect sense for 24ac which I now see but has me stumped on 17d

My 17 is very tenuous - in fact I have only the definition ( and that isn't exact). I'll say no more, as it might prevent you from getting the correct answer (in contrast to mine, that is!)
