Need help parsing this..

2 cut German tree - GASH I can see G(erman) + ASH but why '2'? (The answer to 2 across is 'NASTY')

Also, why does 'U' mean 'Can be seen by everyone'?

2nd point is Universal In film classification - can be seen by all.

A gash might be a nasty cut?
