For those using the online version of the crossword, there is a piece missing from 19A The full version in the print edition reads:
King on phone abandoned former charm, shwoing aversionto empty spaces (10)

Oops! Sorry about typos. That should say:
King on phone abandoned former charm, showing aversion to empty spaces (10)

That explains everything. I was just about to post about the absence of a definition for 19ac.

Annoyingly, I had the newspaper copy (we always buy the Observer), but I print the online Azed off so that my OH can do Everyman without us having to separate the paper, which I hate doing. Never thought to double check my print off with the newspaper copy, though there have been discrepancies before.
