You are on the right deduction John(from Arran),too much of the John Barleycorn for seven days has taken it's toll on my ageing body and mind.

I have to admit that I wasn't brave enough to point out that 'birthing' was only 8 letters long.

A small ditty to mark the occasion:

   A numerate Joker (first name "The")
   Was reputed to be a puzzler.
   But he drank too much booze
   And then muddled the clues
   So thenceforth was known more as a guzzler.
