Clock - mug. in university = up = "Mug up" - study before exam?
Don't have crossword, so cannot help with others.

Thank you so, so much. Moira is 'girl taking me for french artist' leaving ''China with crack that's very small' which fits paltry but not sure it's correct. First time I have tried using the forum. You are a genius.

paltry looks good - china - cockney for mate, pal + try - simile for a crack at something

China - mate (China plate rhyming slang) so =Pal + crack = try (as in have a crack at something), so "paltry" looks good.
