I have e-e-e-.
All I can think of is eleven (cricket, perhaps formerly played only by men?) But I don't really see how that would fit.
Any other helpful ideas?

I think you have a letter wrong. It looks like 'erenow' (old word for 'old'/previously, and hidden in the clue).

I had put 'Defender'.
