Could somebody please explain the wordplay for 46d.
Resentment of soldier in conversation (7) R-N-O--
I think the answer is rancour but just can't see why and it's driving me mad. Many thanks

It's just that rancour(resentment) sounds like ranker, a soldier.

Should have said, the 'in conversation' bit is really just another form of 'sounds like'.
