30ac Educational establishment about to raise national standard (5,4)
U?I?N,????
Is it UNION FLAG or UNION JACK? The only bit I can see is "raise=jack", but pedantically "union jack" is incorrect for the national standard (a jack can only be flown at the stern of a ship).

A crosser has the A in the right place for JACK - still not happy, though.

I've always spelt the answer to 12a with an "e"

I agree, but it is given as an alternative spelling in my newer edition of Chambers (though not in the older one).

Sorry to be pedantic but the Union Jack is only flown on the prow of a ship in harbour, the white ensign is flown at the stern
