The G is confirmed, as is the D.
I presumed God, which is dog "returning pet" from the clue

Pretty much has to be God then - I can only repeat what I said before.

If i am right then it is just a bad clue - maybe someone can give a better explanation.

might have something to do with the word Doggone = darn dammit etc
