Passage seen by judge during ramble around castle,say (5,5)

- A - O - / P - E - E


I keep thinking about piece (castle = chess piece)
Am I on the right track? Any help appreciated.

re chess The Castle/rook along with the Queen is called a Major(or Heavy) piece.
I can't figure the rest of the clue.

I see this has been answered on Another Board as "major piece". Looks like the breakdown is 'j' & 'roam' & 'piece'.

I think JimC is right about
'j' & 'roam' & 'piece'
That seems to make the definition "passage" - is that a music reference?

Sorry Trevor, I was not clear. Trying again ...

I think:

  'piece' = musical passage.
  'j' = judge.
  'roam' = ramble.

Whole thing, 'major piece', is a chess piece, an example of which is a castle.
