I got this one from the letters, but had to look on fifteensquared for the explanation, which I still don't find convincing. Definition is more "to contend"

"Tell" is the definition word in the clue, as in "to tell against" - as I said, I'm not convinced.

Saw "mate" and "i lit" (one drunk) and militate means "to tell convincingly for something" so went with it. "Shed" bit of a mystery to me, no doubt missing something
