38 could be American Pie, I suppose -- but if it is, it's a really duff clue!

38 Henry James wrote "The Americans" and "The Ambassadors", beyond that I'm stumped. (But at least this thread goes back to the top!)

might refer to the phrase "pie in the sky" (plus the americans).
If it does, I agree with Bullfrog - it's a pretty duff clue.
