Thanks, I considered that earlier - Chambers gives the meaning as 'a wide-brimmed hat, first worn in the Terai,India'. I couldn't see how that worked with the clue, but maybe I'm missing something really obvious!

I just had a look on Answerbank - someone there answered Terri(girl). Land= territory,
and it's 'lost'/dropped to ry (to railway, in clue).
