I have 'marrow' for 1 down - OED gives definition as 'the essential part of something'.

I've got toll as in Clarkston Toll etc. Chambers gives junction (Scots) as one meaning

Just wondering if the front of the capital might be Nico, as in Nicosea, and as in the best is still to come, could 1 down be morrow.

1d definitely marrow. Chambers gives both 'like' and 'best part' as meanings.
Not convinced re Nico though not 100% happy with neck for 5d.Capital may be part of a column...
Stil haven't heard any alt answers for 9ac leading to nose for 5d???
