Could be MONTAGE around U for niversity. Don't like montage for picture, though.

I think montage is OK for picture. I sometimes mke a photo montage & it's definitely a picture!Not a v good clue, though

For 38d Afghanistan = anagram of "as night" inside "a fan"

Chambers and Bradfords (Crossword Solver's Dictionary') both have montage equalling picture - it seemed fine to me.

??r?s,I put Paris but cant see it,which would make 31 D pleated?And I dont see that either.(gathered centre of piece is covered with metal externally.)Suspect I am getting a bit tired.....

Centre of piEce is PLATED with metal - pleated meanings gathered in dressmaking, I believe.
