Not xerxes Aristo, it does begin with x though and is in Chambers, though my defn. is closer to the one in Collins

I'd love to explain why...if only I could.

Saw " a partnership with" and thought "a NS w" looked at the last letters of the answers and "the last ones are tricky" and made a shot in the dark.

Close enough AB...

"a partnership with a pulse" = a/NS/w/ers, "the last one's are tricky" being the usual anagram indicator for the last letters of the numbered clues.

There's another definition part in the clue which 1. wouldn't approve of.
