Oh my. A surprise and an honor. Thanks, ixion et al! Lovely prize. Was that a Diamond Jubilee performance?

bobs mum and pastille:
Flip the finger at fate: definition
flatter: COURT
find fault with: DIS (yes, it's in Chambers)
fall feature: ASTER
Note: At least here in New England there are many wild asters, and they- along with goldenrod and the exquisite Joe-Pye weed- signal the onset of fall. I assume the Michaelmas daisy does the same.

Till next week, best wishes.

Ah, your Michaelmas daisy is North American. Better for you than tobacco...

ixion

Not knowing my plants I did consult Chambers which gives it as a late summer/autumn flowerer...wasn't initially sure either about court=flatter as a synonym but it's there in my Chambers also...so it did receive a rigorous examination before being chosen...the defn part was very good also and of course the alliteration.
