I think it is either REND or RENT for the split one CWN

Rend must be right- end = term(inate). I'm going to stop trying to fathom now especially since i've finished. But I still don't get why sunburn was right!! It's just unsatisfying to bung in answers that fit.

Sunburn is damage to your hide if you read hide as skin.

For those struggling to interpret 8D, Chambers has this for LIGHT:

"In a crossword, the word (or sometimes an individual letter in the word) on the diagram that is the answer to a clue"

The OED has:

"The item filling the spaces in a crossword puzzle as the answer to a clue".

"First light" here is simply one (I) ACROSS.

"One succeeds" is VICTOR.
