A bit off the wall perhaps, but maybe SEMAR - anagram of SEA (main) and RM (jolly) - a charcater from Javanese myth.

Thanks ab It was so obvious but we had a wrong answer in the other grid when we checked back. It is indeed Santa! Thought first it was an anagram.
