Hard going today, difficult to believe it's the usual setter.

Choose young Turk originally in part as conductor(11) ELECTROLYTE? ELECT (choose) YT (young turk) but the rest....

They're cross, upset about spelling practice(7) - S?R?E?Y (there's only about 4 words with that pattern and I can't make a case for any, maybe I've gone wrong somewhere)

role = part

sorcery backwards in the clue.....spells as in casting spells.
