For 10A I have chest for wooden box which gave me the E

For 8A I had carbine for light automatic rifle which gave me the E in move back

Looks OK, redcoral. I can think of a number of 4-letter famous female singers, but unfortunately none that fit your letter pattern!

Thanks chrise & phillip for trying but it looks as if I shall remain baffled! Its always possible I've made a couple of mistakes with my answers of course!

Philip I think you are right (Your suggestion crossed with my reply!) Oh No it won't help as then I have PI*A for the singer which isn't PIAF!

Crate is correct as then I get RECEDE for 6D so at least that one is solved Could the singer be TINA?
