Last one. 2d. "Forward unsupported almost gets header on goal"(5). A?O?G. I think it's 'along' rather than 'among', possibly anagram of 'n' +'goal', or maybe 'alone'(unsupported) with 'g' rather than final 'e'. But I can't follow the wordplay - or even the definition.Could some kind soul explain it for me?

it's along.

unsupported almost = alon(e)
+ header on goal = G

trevor and phillip. Many thanks to you both. The wordplay is now clear. I feel the definition has been a little stretched, but Chambers gives 'onward' under 'along' so perhaps I should have picked that up as synonymous with 'forward'. Possibly a wee Drambuie now to celebrate a satisfactory resolution, and then to bed. Cheers!
