....it's either an anagram of "in oils" (can't find a suitable fit) or it's Alison. Somebody put me out of my misery please!!

Well, I can't find a suitable anagram of "in oils" so another tack was called for....

....Alison is the name of a "girl" and it fits!! I don't understand the relevance of the "in oils" part in this case but not understanding part of a WS clue is relatively normal!!

ILISON is the name of an artist,but don't know if female or male.
You could try Google perhaps.
