Sorry, I did not make myself clear. The actual clue says father (singular) and sons (plural) giving PAPA + SS included in what 1Ac does to give the title of a work by 17.

I meant to add my comments. It’s great to see contributors to this thread getting into the spirit of a classic Araucaria by limiting submissions to hints and tips. This really is a Bank Holiday treat to be savoured. There is a good number of straightforward clues to get one started, plenty of general knowledge (2Dn, 4Dn) coupled with wit (23Dn, 1Ac, 8Dn), teetering on the edge of fairness, without quite toppling in through the judicious use of the question mark (40 Ac, 39Dn, 50Ac), and of course tons of thematic material enabling us to revisit some old favourites or even visit some for the first time. Fun for all the family!

turast,
I parsed the clue as pa + pa + s + s. Silly me - again

Finished! But only thank to a large clue here. He's not a favourite so I might never have got there.

Don't understand where the last 7 letters of 37a come from - how they match the end of the clue.

37a: 45a plus supporter for first 5 letters; next 3 are the generic word for sesame; 'is' plus manuscript / hand completes it.

I also think I've got 50A but again can't parse it. Who is this top film star 5?

And why is 39D an English speaker and not either a non-Spanish foreigner or a speaker of Spanish with a foreign accent?

50a is a film (1962) not a film star

Thanks barista, and also sudokulover, although in 50A I think the answer being a film is merely incidental. I see now that "top film star 5" means "take the first letter off the surname of a film star named 5".

Desperation brings me here for the first time, and what a great place it turns out to be! Can't work out why I'm the only one stuck on 48a, I had all the rest done before lunch (with a little help from Google, of course!) Could anyone please put me out of my misery? Is my first letter T wrong?
