I got the answer as TOLA,a grain and an anagram of 'a lot'.

Barista, I'm pretty much at the same stage as you - I have 7 definite unclued answers and 2 possibles. So far I have one group of three, one group that has only two so far, and the rest is just random words! I have no idea about the 'thematic references'!
