Greedy Kite - the second word of 2d a chain store? Is that all they sell, then - and only one !!
When young I used to wear one, esp when I lived in windy Anglesey.
Angelmcm - I`ve lived in your sort of climate but our recent heat wave knocked me out! No big fans or air-con here. mags.

mallard, I had to resort to quick solve or was it solution wizard - never heard of this composer - rather obscure! I reckon it's another word for land preceded by another word for gain - but not an obvious one. But maybe I have it wrong! Perhaps somebody else knows better.

Oh no, sorry, I answered for 17d - duh! 19d is a colour, often applied to a lipstick for instance. It's the chemical symbol for carbon, followed by a type of examination - think languages.

Thanks angelmcm, how blindingly obvious once someone else has helped lift the scales from one's eyes!! Now I can put it down and eat!

I have a composer for 17dn, ("semper dolens"?) but don't fully understand the answer - if I'm right, where does the W come from?

On the other hand, it could be a much more recent composer - clue now makes sense!

Angelmcm. A modern composer - American (`Fanfare for the Common Man`).
Just had a call from my son who`s been in France. Said it got up to 46c (the exact centre of France) I don`t envy you.

Thanks magworth. As you can see, I got it at the second try. It didn't immediately occur to me that there was more than one composer with that 4-letter ending - too pleased with the first I thought of!
